All railgun shells, except for the canister shell, can hold 1 small to medium-sized item that is "used" upon impact. Medical Items, however, will not affect the target.

The usual railgun shells are hollow and can be filled with an item. This feature allows for the placement of explosives (for example a C-4 Block) inside, creating more damaging ammunitions if need be.
<!-- someone mentioned poisons work in rail shells, someone else can test and report back -->

Nuclear railgun shells are special ammunitions of extreme destructive power, which can be precious to bring down some creatures, such as Endworms or Coelanths. Due to the large radius of the ensuing explosion, it is however highly recommended to use this type of ammunition at a distance.

As many other structures in the submarine, the railgun requires electricity to function; their associated mural battery need to be charged before firing, and each shot will use up some amount of this store. Note that attempting to fire a railgun with no shell loaded doesn't empty the battery.

The Railgun is a Submarine Weapon in Barotrauma. Similar to other turrets, it requires a loader to be linked to it for ammo.

Functions & Usage

Railguns fire high velocity shells that deal high amounts of damage to anything they hit.

Like other turrets, periscopes are typically used to aim and fire railguns. Firing railguns draws power from their connected supercapacitors, as well as shells from their linked loaders.

Ammunition

There are 4 types of railgun shells:

 • Railgun Shells are typically filled with explosives to increase damage.
 • Physicorium Shells are typically used for single targets. Their main advantage over normal shells is the increased direct damage.
 • Nuclear Shells deal damage in a large radius, most typically used against other submarines. Their large explosion radius makes friendly fire a common risk.
 • Canister Shells are good against medium-sized groups of creatures or single medium-health creatures. Can be recycled with lead.

All railgun shells, except for the canister shell, can hold 1 small to medium-sized item that is "used" upon impact. Notably, this can be used to detonate explosives, such as C-4 Blocks, Frag Grenades, or 40mm Grenades. Medical Items, however, will not affect the target.
