The SMG is a Handheld Ranged Weapon in Barotrauma.

Description

The SMG is a two-handed medium-range, small-size firearm. It shoots rounds from a detachable magazine. The SMG functions both on board of the submarine and underwater, although its spread makes it unreliable at hitting distant targets.

It can be crafted by a Security Officer with the Weaponsmith talent, or alternatively can be bought on Outposts with a difficulty of at least 30.

Function

The SMG is held with both hands and must be loaded with an SMG Magazine to be used. As with all weapons and tools, using it is done by holding the Right Mouse Right-click to take aim, then by Left Mouse Left-clicking to shoot/use. Being an automatic weapon, the SMG can be fired continuously until the Magazine runs out of rounds by holding Left Mouse.

  • It has a single slot for ammunition which can contain one magazine (21 rounds).
  • It should be noted that the SMG has a large spread, which is made even larger for Characters with a Weapons skill lower than 50, greatly reducing its utility outside of point-blank range.
  • Like most two-handed weapons, the SMG has a Flashlight slot. The insterted Flashlight automatically turns on whenever the weapon is drawn.
  • Deconstructing a full SMG Magazine will yield 1 Lead and 1 Steel Bar. Deconstructing an empty magazine will yield only 1 Steel Bar. Empty Magazines can be recycled by a Security Officer with the Munitions Expertise talent.
  • It can be stored in the inventory.
  • The SMG has a damage multiplier of 1.3, making it deal a lot more damage than other weapons using the same ammunition.

Damage Values

Note: As of 2022/12/17, the below table cannot take into account a weapon's innate damage-, and penetration-modifiers. The SMG has a damage-multiplier of 1.3, dealing 30% more damage (applying to all afflictions, including stun) than indicated below. For comparison: The Machine Pistol has 0.8 (dealing about 62% damage, compared to an SMG), and the Deadeye Carbine has 1.1 (85% compared to an SMG). The SMG is also the only weapon with a penetration modifier (0.15), presumably additive to the ammo's (which would put standard rounds to 15% armor penetration, and depleted rounds to 40%).

Trivia

  • Magazines don't actually contain 21 rounds, instead they spawn bullets on demand as long as the Magazine has enough durability, like the Coilgun.
  • The SMG used to not be craftable, however in the 0.20 update it was made craftable by a Security Guard as a part of the talent rework.
