Morphine is an extremely useful Medicine used to treat many common injuries.

Function

Morphine treats Damage and, to an extremely small extent, Burns.
Applying Morphine to a character will decrease Damage by 50. This value will be scaled to maximum Vitality, and so in effect will always replenish 50% of a character's health, no matter their maximum vitality. Morphine can be applied to any limb, and its effects will be spread to all limbs equally.
Morphine does heal Burns, however since the effects are negligibly small, it should not be used as a treatment. Bandages or Plastiseal should be used for the treatment of Burns instead.

Usage

Like all Medical Items, Morphine can be applied through the Health GUI (Default Key H). See this page for more information on usage.

Morphine can be loaded into a Syringe Gun, and can also be swung from the hand to apply its effects to whatever it hits.

Morphine is used to craft some advanced medicines:

  • Naloxone - A treatment for the side effects of opiates like Morphine.
  • Fentanyl - A more powerful version of Morphine.
  • Combat Stimulant - A useful buff that greatly improves survivability.

Overdose, Addiction, and Withdrawal

When applied, Morphine will increase Opiate Overdose by 10, Opiate Addiction by 5, and decrease Opiate Withdrawal by 30. When applying opiates, (Opium, Morphine & Fentanyl) great care should be taken to not apply too much too quickly. Overdosing can become an issue if several opiates are taken with a few seconds, and can kill extremely quickly. (Opiate Overdose decreases passively by 0.5/s, and so the effects of one dose of Morphine will disappear after 20 seconds.) Opiate overdosing is even more dangerous if the opiate is being applied by a character with low Medical Skill. (If the skill requirement is not met, applying 4 Morphine in quick succession will reach maximum overdose.) If opiates are being applied repeatedly over a longer period of time, Opiate Addiction may become a problem. (Opiate Addiction decreases passively at a rate of 0.05/s, and so the effects of one dose of Morphine will disappear after 100 seconds.) A character with high Opiate Addiction will start developing Opiate Withdrawal, which can be quite dangerous at high levels.
Opiate Overdose, Opiate Addiction and Opiate Withdrawal can all be treated with Naloxone (60 affliction strength decrease for each).

Notes

Morphine is very effective for its cost, and so is a staple medicine on any ship. For most cases, one Morphine will be enough to get a downed crewmate back on their feet, with 2 or 3 only being necessary for the most severe of wounds. It is generally not advised to spend Morphine on minor wounds. The Health Scanner HUD will show the percentage of damage that a character has taken, (one dose of Morphine will heal exactly 50%) and this can be used to judge whether it is worth using a morphine as treatment.
While Morphine does apply 20 Oxygen Low, it is usually not a concern, unless the patient is already out of oxygen. If a character is downed, the vitality increase by applying the Morphine will usually get them conscious again, at which point they will be able to breathe on their own.

Since Morphine works on most Creatures, it can be used in a Syringe Gun to quickly heal Pets.
