The Protein Bar is a medical item that can be purchased at Vending Machines.

Function

Protein Bars treat a small amount of Damage and Burns.

Applying a protein bar to a character will decrease both Damage and Burns by 7.5. Protein bars can be applied to any limb, and its effects will be spread to all limbs equally.

Compared to similar medical items, Protein bars are slightly less effective than Pomegrenade Extract at treating Damage, and much less effective at treating Burns than Bandages, however has the advantage of affecting all limbs.

Protein Bars treat both regular Burns and Acid Burns.

Damage (affliction type) has many sources, including various environmental hazards and Creatures. Burns are caused by fires, failing an electrical repair, various weapons such as Flamers and Ancient Weapons, Explosives, Radiation Sickness, and some Creature attacks, such as Fractal Guardians and Watchers.

Usage

Like all Medical Items, Protein Bars can be applied through the Health GUI (Default Key ). See this page for more information on usage.

The Protein Bar can be used by holding the right mouse button; after 3.3 seconds the item will be consumed, and its effects will be applied instantly.

It can also be swung from the hand to apply its effects to whatever it hits. The animation for swinging Protein Bars is twice the speed of swinging other medical items.

Protein Bars cannot be loaded into a Syringe Gun.

Protein Bars are not used in any crafting recipes.

Notes

As a medical item, the Protein Bar is not very effective. It only treats ~18% as effectively compared to Morphine (treating 40 affliction strength) and 15% compared to Plastiseal (treating 50 affliction strength), and so is not a very viable emergency treatment for injured characters, unless a large quantity is used.

Protein Bars are not difficult to obtain - every outpost (including abandoned outposts) contain several Vending Machines which each offer 5-10 for sale. The purchase price of 40 marks may seem low, however when compared to other medicines, it is poor value. Opium, which treats Damage more than twice as effectively and is an important crafting ingredient, is valued at roughly the same price (when purchased from the medicine merchant). Because of its poor value, Protein Bars should only be purchased if one has nothing else to spend money on.
