Fentanyl

A powerful opiate for treating pain associated with internal injuries, but will cause shortness of breath and eventual dependency with overuse.

Fentanyl is an powerful Medicine capable of treating many common injuries.

Function

Fentanyl treats Damage and, to an extremely small extent, Burns. It is a more advanced version of Morphine.
Applying Fentanyl to a character will decrease Damage by 75. This value will be scaled to maximum Vitality, and so in effect will always replenish 75% of a character's health, no matter their maximum vitality. Fentanyl can be applied to any limb, and its effects will be spread to all limbs equally.
Fentanyl does heal Burns, however since the effects are very small, it should not be used to treat burns. Instead, Bandages or Plastiseal should be used for the treatment of burns.

Usage

Like all Medical Items, Fentanyl can be applied through the Health GUI (Default Key H). See this page for more information on usage.

Fentanyl can be loaded into a Syringe Gun, and can also be swung from the hand to apply its effects to whatever it hits. Both of these methods will apply the full effects of the Fentanyl, and since Fentanyl is limb-independent, it may be quicker for a Medical Doctor to use these methods than to open the GUI.

Fentanyl is used to craft some advanced medicines:

  • Deusizine - A potent medicine capable of treating internal damage, oxygen deprivation, and blood loss.
  • Anabolic Steroids - A performance enhancing drug that applies Vigor.

Overdose, Addiction, and Withdrawal

When applied, Fentanyl will increase Opiate Overdose by 22.5, Opiate Addiction by 7.5, and decrease Opiate Withdrawal by 100. When applying opiates, ( Opium, Morphine & Fentanyl) great care should be taken to not apply too much too quickly. Overdosing can become an issue if several Opiates are taken within a few seconds, and can kill extremely quickly. (Opiate overdose decreases passively by 0.5/s, and so the effects of one dose of Fentanyl will disappear after 45 seconds.) Opiate overdosing is even more dangerous if the opiate is being applied by a character with low Medical Skill. (If the skill requirement is not met, applying 3 Fentanyl in quick succession will reach near maximum overdose.) If opiates are being applied repeatedly over a longer period of time, Opiate Addiction may become a problem. (Opiate addiction decreases passively at a rate of 0.05/s, and so the effects of one dose of Fentanyl will disappear after 150 seconds.) A character with high Opiate Addiction will start developing Opiate Withdrawal, which can be quite dangerous at high levels.
Opiate Overdose, Opiate Addiction and Opiate Withdrawal can all be treated with Naloxone (60 affliction strength decrease for each).

Notes

Fentanyl is very effective at treating injuries, and while it is a bit more expensive than its weaker variant Morphine, it is extremely useful at getting a downed crewmate quickly back up. Since Fentanyl is so powerful, only one dose is necessary for the vast majority of cases, with two doses only being necessary to heal extremely severe wounds. Since Fentanyl is somewhat expensive, wasting it on minor wounds is heavily advised against. The Health Scanner HUD will show the percentage of damage that a character has taken, (one dose of Fentanyl will heal exactly 75%) and this can be used to judge whether it is worth using a fentanyl as treatment.
While Fentanyl does apply 30 Oxygen Low, it is usually not a concern, unless the patient is already out of oxygen. If a character is downed, the vitality increase by applying the Fentanyl will very likely get them conscious again, at which point they will be able to breathe on their own.

Trivia

  • While the item is referred to as an "opiate" several times in game, the real drug fentanyl is not actually an opiate. Since fentanyl is synthetic, it is actually classified as an opioid. The two terms are often confused, but opiates are extracted or refined from plant matter, whereas opioids are synthetically produced. The term opioid is also sometimes used to refer to both natural and synthetic drugs as a whole.
    • Since Europan fentanyl is made from morphine (which is itself made from opium, which is extracted from a plant), it is possible that the substance which is called fentanyl on Europa is distinct from fentanyl originating from Earth, but has been given the same name due to similarities in their effects. This might explain why it is referred as an opiate.
  • Due to the high overdose power of Fentanyl, it is sometimes used a weapon in PVP.
