The Black Moloch is a variant of the Moloch. It is encountered in Random Events.

Description

The Black Moloch, as the name suggests, is a black variant of the Moloch. Its darker shell makes it harder to see, though the dull greenish glow of the Black Moloch's core tends to reveal its location. Black Molochs are a significantly greater threat compared to the Moloch, and caution is advised when encountering one.

In-Game

One unique trait of the Black Moloch is its ramming attack. Unlike the Moloch, the Black Moloch's ramming attack has a large area-of-effect with a light EMP effect which deals 250 structure damage. This can be devastating to the electronics on the sub, and the temporary blackout the EMP causes can restrict the Captain's ability to retreat. If the Submarine does not retreat before the Black Moloch attacks again, it is very likely that all electronics onboard will be destroyed, along with any stored power in Batteries.

Another unique trait is the sonar disruption. While alive, a Black Moloch's sonar signature appears as a large red-orange cluster of pips, and its body is completely invisible. This effect is similar to Sonar Flora.

Combat Strategies

Black Molochs are to be prioritized over Molochs if seen in a group. It is highly advised to maintain a safe distance from the Black Moloch, to minimize the risk of its EMP ramming attack being used against the submarine. The Railgun is an extremely effective weapon against the Black Moloch, as is the Pulse Laser. Both can easily destroy the Black Moloch's shell, revealing the soft, vulnerable core underneath. This core must be targeted at all times when exposed, to ensure a swift execution of the Black Moloch.

The use of small arms or melee weapons against a Black Moloch is considered suicide.
