The Cthulhu (or Balloon) is one of the four Pets added in Vanilla 0.10.6.0 as part of the Halloween Update: Creepy Creature Feature.
Taking care of the onboard Pet is the next level of things to keep the crew busy when it is not too busy.
Description
The Cthulhu retains its signature octopus-like head whose face is a mass of feelers, though its body is of a dragon with a pair of wings and a tail. This is the only Pet that flies by flapping its wings and never touches the ground.
For Halloween, it holds a jack-o'-lantern in its arms, despite not being lit.
Unlike other Pets, the Cthulhu has no audio.
In-game
The Cthulhu has two inventory slots that can be accessed when alive and grabbed by the player. Any small items can be stored here, but mostly one of the slots is for the File:ID Card icon.png Pet Name Tag if the player wishes to name the Pet. If it dies, the body will splatter and any contents in its inventory will be destroyed.
It also has two hidden stats that the crew needs to pay attention to: Hunger and Happiness.
Hunger
Every Pet needs to eat relinquish their Hunger, which increases by 0.03% every second. At 30% Hunger, Pets become hungry and the Hunger icon will appear above their head. The player can feed them by dropping an appropriate Food item on the ground and the tamed Creature will approach and consume it immediately.
There are three Pet Food types that Pets can consume: type 1, type 2, and type 3. The Cthulhu can only eat Pet Food type 2, which satiates only 10% Hunger and increases 5% Happiness. Items that are classified as Pet Food type 2 includes:
- Fruits: Pomegrenade and Raptor Bane. (NOTE: Mutated Pomegrenade and Mutated Raptor Bane are also Pet Food type 2 but cannot be fed to Pets as the Mutated Pomegrenade explodes on impact when dropped and Mutated Raptor Bane splatters on impact when dropped)
- Chemical: Ethanol.
- Medical: Saline.
When well-fed (0-29% Hunger), the Cthulhu will no longer need to eat and start producing some items, most commonly a pile of Poop. At 80% Happiness and beyond, there is a 15% chance it will lay the Strange Egg. Besides the Egg, it does not have any other unique items to produce like other Pets.
Happiness
The Happiness is the state of Pets and ensures item production to occur.
The Cthulhu's Happiness decreases by 0.016% every second and can be increased by being fed or played with. There is a 6 second cooldown before the player can play with it again.
When Happiness is high enough, the Happy icon will appear above its head. But if Happiness is low enough, the Sad icon will appear instead.
