Watchers are octopus-like European creatures named after their intense gaze. Despite their startling appearance, they count amongst the most benign members of Europa's fauna -in fact, as of version 0.3, they are completely harmless.

Description

The Watcher looks like a cross between an octopus and a tree stump.

Their iridescent head's main feature is its large eye, which gives the creature its name.

The Watcher's tentacles are dark, slightly ramified and wooden-looking, thus calling branches to mind.

The Watcher presents a shell articulated at the base of the head, which is curious since it doesn't appear to offer any actual protection (the head is armored on its own).

In-game

Watchers are passive but inquisitive creatures: despite having no desire to attack the submarine or the crew, Watchers like to approach windows to gaze at human activities -which tends to disturb people due to the Watchers' impressive appearance and complete silence. They are visually-oriented animals, with a splendid sense of vision but seemingly suffering from deafness.

Harming a Watcher is made difficult by the relatively high health and their armored head (damages inflicted to this part from any angle are reduced to 1/100th) -it is recommended to aim at the limbs for maximal efficiency.

Watchers are currently harmless, but details of their code indicate they may become vengeful when hurt in future versions; their resilience may then make them impressive adversaries. Taking this into account, the proper course of action during an encounter with a Watcher is presumably to simply ignore it.

Damage Values

As of now, Watchers are unable to attack and thus completely harmless. However, their AI presents the tag "attackwhenprovoked="true"", indicating Watchers will eventually be able to hit back.
