Unidentified Genetic Material (also known as UGM) is a resource that can be researched to create Genetic Materials.

Obtaining

UGM spawns naturally in wrecks, outposts, and ruins. Specifically, in medical cabinets found in outposts (inhabited and abandoned), wrecks and pirates. UGM spawns in medical cabinets with a ~31% chance. It also spawns in incubation bubbles with a 60% chance.

With the Gene Harvester talent, a medic can loot a corpse of a non-mechanical, non-human creature for a 20% chance to spawn one sample of UGM. This only works once per corpse, and cannot be attempted with multiple medics; only the first character with this talent to loot the corpse has the chance to spawn UGM. The type of creature does not influence the type of genes it will research into - UGM looted from a crawler will not have any higher chance to yield crawler genes.

With the Blackmarket Genes talent, a medic can purchase UGM at research outposts and colonies. They will be sold by the general merchant at those locations, with 10-15 being sold at research outposts, and 5-10 being sold at cities. Only the medic with the talent will be able to see the items and purchase them.

Researching

UGM can be placed in a Research Table to produce Genetic Material. To do this, one sample of UGM must be placed in either slot of the research table, alongside one Stabilozine. Once the "research" button is pressed, both input items will be consumed and a random Genetic Material will be produced, of quality in a range between 10% - 60%. All different types of genes are equally likely to be produced, and the outputted genetic material cannot be tainted.

The quality of the genes is organized into "tiers", where higher tiers (with higher qualities) are less likely. The outputted gene will be of one of three tiers, and will have a random strength within that tier; for example it is equally likely to output 25% and 35%, but those are both twice as likely than 45% or 55%.

The process of researching is not affected by any talents or by the medical skill of the character doing the researching.

Item Rarity Strength Range Chance
Tier 1 10% - 20% 50%
Tier 2 20% - 40% 33.3%
Tier 3 40% - 60% 16.7%
