Volatile Fulgurium Fuel Rods are fuel for the Nuclear Reactor or the Rapid Fissile Accelerator.

Function & Usage

Volatile Fulgurium Fuel Rods can be used in a Nuclear Reactor to provide power, or as ammunition for the Rapid Fissile Accelerator. The condition of the fuel rod drains as it is used, and when it reaches 0% it no longer produces power. Empty fuel rods can be refilled with more Fulgurium, or recycled into Depleted Fuel. Volatile Fulgurium Fuel Rods are significantly more long-lasting than any other fuel rods, however this is offset by the danger that handling them presents; unlike other fuel rods, Volatile Fulgurium Fuel Rods will constantly inflict 1 Radiation Sickness per second to characters within 1.25 meters, even when depleted (0 durability). Wearing a PUCS is the ideal solution when handling them, as it grants 90% resistance to Radiation Sickness. Other radiation protective gear include the various types of Diving Suits and the Hazmat Suit.

  • Resistances stack multiplicatively, so wearing a Hazmat Suit with with the Danger Zone talent grants an effective resistance to Radiation Sickness of 80%.
    • Combining this with the resistance from a PUCS, a character will have a 98% resistance to Radiation Sickness. This is enough to safely remain within the vicinity of 3 Volatile Fulgurium Fuel Rods indefinitely, or to hold an entire stack of 8 rods for just over 4.5 minutes before taking any Burn damage.


They can only be crafted by an Engineer with the Danger Zone talent unlocked; They cannot be bought at any Outpost.

  • All fuel rods were initially intended to cause minor radiation sickness while being handled, however this feature is unimplemented due to bugs. The Volatile Fulgurium Fuel Rod lacks this behavior, due to its much more intense effects.
