Backstory

Barotrauma takes place several hundred years in the future. In this time, humanity has established various colonies on multiple planets.

The game takes place on Europa, one of Jupiter’s orbiting moons. Due to the deadly amounts of radiation on the surface of the moon, several colonies have been established under its icy crust. The vast subsurface ocean under the crust is used as a transport route between the colonies and a source of natural resources. Many research facilities and defense outposts have been established near several transportation shafts leading from the colonies down into the ocean.

Game Events

The game takes place in a submarine traveling in the subsurface ocean. The player’s job is to keep the submarine operational, while carrying out various tasks to earn funds for buying supplies and hiring new crew members.

Along with this, the player must also watch out for monsters that inhabit the ocean. Due to the location, replacement parts and other supplies are difficult to come by, so the facility is filled with makeshift equipment and poorly repaired systems. This makes keeping the submarine in a stable state much more difficult.

The game can be played either in single player mode where the player can choose which crew member to control (others being controlled by AI), and an online multiplayer mode where each player controls one of the crew members.
