Liquid Oxygenite is a medical item that treats Oxygen Low. Explodes on impact.

Function

Liquid Oxygenite is a medicine that can be used to treat Oxygen Low. It is also highly volatile, and explodes when impacting creatures or structures.

This medicine can be used to keep an unconscious character from suffocating, or keep conscious a character that is not breathing. Usage will incur a small amount of Organ Damage as a side effect.

When succeeding the skill check, only one dose is required to keep an unconscious character alive, but 2 doses may be required to bring an unconscious character back to consciousness. Failing the skill check dramatically reduces the duration, and thus its usefulness.

As an explosive, Liquid Oxygenite deals appreciable damage to Creatures. It can be used as ammunition in the Syringe Gun as an effective, if expensive weapon.

Usage

Like all Medical Items, Liquid Oxygenite can be applied through the Health GUI (Default Key H). See this page for more information on usage.

Liquid Oxygenite can be loaded into a Syringe Gun, and can also be swung from the hand to apply its effects to whatever it hits. Liquid Oxygenite will not explode when swung from the hand.

Liquid Oxygenite is also used to craft:

Due to Liquid Oxygenite's explosive nature, the Syringe Gun should not be used to apply it as medicine.

Mechanics

Liquid Oxygenite treats Oxygen Low in three phases, getting progressively weaker; for the first 5 seconds it is reduced by -7.5/s, for the next 40 seconds it is reduced by -5/s, then for the final 15 seconds it is reduced by -2.5/s. (This is slightly simplified, due to the delay on each of the instances of Oxygen Low reduction.)

When not breathing, Oxygen Low will increase by 1/s for characters that are unconscious, and so a single dose will be sufficient to keep the character from suffocating for the entire 60 second duration, and will resuscitate them if they are in an environment where they can breathe.

A character that is not breathing but still conscious will gain Oxygen Low at a rate of 5/s, so using Liquid Oxygenite on such a character will reduce the Oxygen Low for the first 5 seconds, maintain equilibrium during the next 40 seconds, then slowly increase over the last 15 seconds.

Thus, if the patient is not in an environment where they can breathe, but regain consciousness within the first 5 seconds of receiving a dose of Liquid Oxygenite, they will remain conscious throughout the second phase, but fall unconscious again during the third phase.

Additionally, if a character is in an environment where they cannot breathe, if they do not regain consciousness within the first 5 seconds of receiving a dose, during the second phase (between 5 and 45 seconds) where Oxygen Low is reduced by -5/s, the Oxygen Low reduction will not be high enough to bring them back to consciousness, and they will remain just at the threshold of consciousness, but be unable to wake. During the final 15 seconds, the reduction will be enough to have Oxygen Low reduce while unconscious, but increase while conscious, leading to the patient rapidly fluctuating between consciousness and unconsciousness. If CPR is performed, the patient can be brought back to consciousness for the rest of the duration of the second phase.

Failing the skill check drastically reduces the duration - the effects are identical to passing the skill check, however cut off after only 10 seconds. This will not grant a patient any appreciable consciousness if they are not breathing, but can assist in resuscitating a suffocating patient if medical skill is low. A second dose may be required, depending on how severe the Oxygen Low levels are on the patient. Note that even at zero medical skill, the chance to fail the skill check is only 50%, and since the Organ Damage side effect is fairly minimal even upon failure, Liquid Oxygenite is a valid way for crew members with medical skill too low to perform CPR to revive drowning crewmates.

Notes

Liquid Oxygenite does high Burn damage on impact. When loaded in a Syringe Gun, it can be used like a Grenade Launcher, and is capable of downing or killing most Creatures in one or two shots. Note that the projectile occasionally can - if it is traveling very slow - simply inject into the target instead of exploding.

Contrary to the description, it is perfectly safe to drop while standing or crouching. The item must be moving at 8m/s or higher to trigger the explosion, which is only attainable through dropping when at a height of ~3.5 meters or greater.

Due to the extremely high Oxygen Low reduction (and so the extremely high potential healing power), Liquid Oxygenite can be used as an effective way to increase medical skill for relatively low cost.
