Coming next week: Calm Before the Storm update

Hello everyone!

The first update of 2025, titled Calm Before the Storm, is now just around the corner. Despite being a “bits and bobs” kind of update, containing content additions that missed the deadline for earlier releases, Calm Before the Storm introduces a number of changes we think you’ll enjoy. Let’s take one final look at what you’ll be getting your hands on next week.

The cherry on top of Permadeath mode: the Reserve Bench

The reserve bench is the long-missing feature of the Permadeath mode which we introduced last summer. The reserve bench allows you to hire bots into reserve, rather than active duty, where they will wait until you have room and the need for them – such as when you lose a character by dying in Permadeath mode.

Even though the reserve bench was originally designed as part of the Permadeath mode, it also works in regular campaigns, meaning you can “stock up” on skilled bots and not have to go looking for one when dangerous events create a new opening in your crew roster.

Updated visuals

We’ve reworked many of the loading screens/location portraits with brand new art. The visual improvements also extend to the level backgrounds in the Cold Caverns and the Great Sea, with more visual polish still coming later to the other biomes. You may also notice new kinds of background creatures swimming around.

Abandoned outpost & ruin modules and a new PvP outpost

Abandoned outpost modules have been reworked, improving the quality overall and fixing some long-standing issues we haven’t had time to address before. More excitingly, there are 14 completely new modules, thanks to long-time modder NotWendy!

Alien ruins will also receive three new maze modules, a new mission, and fixes, and the update adds a new, alien ruins themed outpost for the Outpost Deathmatch mode.

Submarine improvements

The update contains a minor rework of the Remora sub. Rather than a complete overhaul, we’ve improved some commonly reported problem areas: The layout has been improved, and the auxiliary engine now works with batteries. We’ve also added a brig and a dedicated gunnery compartment. The drone has also been reworked and has tougher shells.

Additionally, the Kastrull, Winterhalter and Typhon subs have received some small touch-ups and fixes.

Jovian radiation improvements

We’ve made Jovian radiation both more dangerous, and hopefully more interesting. The intensity of the radiation will now ramp up quicker the deeper you are in a radiation zone. Eventually it will be strong enough to pass through your hazmat and PUCS suits, so don’t linger in the zone for too long! As a counterbalance, radiation sickness is now easier to deal with at low levels, and PUCS suits won’t be as essential in dealing with Jovian radiation initially.

Additionally, some monsters will now be buffed by the radiation, which brings a new danger to radiation zones.

Calm Before the Storm coming next week

As usual, the update will also contain a long list of fixes, optimizations and smaller improvements – stay tuned for the update and the full changelog next week!

adding a depth charge tube to the drones of kastrull and remora would make for SO MANY PVP and gameplay opportunities and tactics. Imagine using a drone to deliever a player in a boarding pod to an enemy sub without even coming in the turrets attack range. Brilliant.

When are we getting new weaponry system. Like the assault laser you guys mention in the poster? Sounds like a heavy hard point weapons. As the current submarine weapons is dominate by laser meta. Would love to see something else shows up and shake up the meta a bit

Please, we need the Chinese version of the supporter DLC. Many players from China can’t understand it because of language problems after purchasing the supporter DLC.

Jovian radiation changes is a complete miss. What we asked was to make it work like in FTL: it only progresses when we move to next area, not in real time! This would turn campaign mode in rogue-like adventure, but still letting us chill at station an explore levels to our heart content. Current radiation is more of annoying, rather than challenging.

The new tilesets are alwats welcome! Cheers

Can you release the game on PlayStation so that people who don’t have a computer can play it?

I really want to play this game but I don’t want to buy a computer for it.
