Sneak peek: Character overhaul

Hello everyone!

One of the few big things still left in Barotrauma that we have not thoroughly overhauled during Early Access are humanoid characters. With the next update, we finally get to cross that one off our to do list.

A complete character overhaul

We’re remaking the looks of characters from the ground up, starting with a new ragdoll and animations. The ragdoll system itself hasn’t been changed (and most likely won’t be!), so some comical jankiness is still to be expected. Instead, we’ve revisited the proportions and limb placements of characters, which should make them look a bit more natural.

Next, the faces. While it kind of makes sense for the denizens of Europa to be no beauty contest winners, it is definitely time to improve our character faces. As we’ve remade them all on a fairly tight schedule, the number of available face options is probably going to be lowered a little with the next update, but this is temporary. We’ll add more later!

We’ve also remade all the hairstyles, costumes, and accessories, and added a skin shader system so you can customize your character’s complexion. Hair and facial hair colors can likewise be customized, and most facial hair styles can be picked independently of the selected face and hair. Karma and husk overlays for characters have also been improved.

(Please bear in mind that the pictures in this post are works in progress, and the visuals may still change in places before the update is released!)

Barotrauma character customization for singleplayer

Last but not least, we’re finally adding character customization for singleplayer. It may have some limitations, at first – we’re currently working on this part of the character overhaul, so details are still a little unsure. Once we release the update, do let us know if the singleplayer customization works well for your needs!

That’s all this time. Stay tuned as we move closer to the update – next time we write, it will be to introduce the alien ruins overhaul!

Wait, that is clean. Definitely keep it up with the characters, everyone likes being original in the game and having his own role on the submarine.

Just curious, but why would you limit the character customization options for single player? Theoretically it should be the exact same mechanic between single player and multiplayer, shouldn’t it? I’m certainly not a coder or anything, and obviously I could be way off base and I apologize if I’m trivializing something that’s more complex than it seems, but couldn’t you just copy and paste the code and have it function exactly the same way in both modes?

Either way, the characters look more varied and interesting, but my only real critique is that some of the eyes are completely black and are kind of distracting. In general it seems like the eyes, mouths and noses are areas in which the artist could focus some attention, to be honest. That said, I welcome any system that allows for more customization than is currently available, so I’m not complaining.

Thanks for the hard work, devs.

i hope a console command to change character names are added in the overhaul, for the ‘serious’ crews who add ranks to their names

You know you can change the names of the characters in single player by going to the store, and in multiplayer by going to the char window.

The devs do not need to look after modders, they have their own vision and it is their game. The modders needs to adapt, as simple as that.So don’t throw rocks in front of their feet.

Oof, I may be jumping the gun here, but these first looks at the characters don’t seem so good… I like the current ones more from what I can see in these images. But, you guys have made an amazing game thus far, so I should at least wait to see it implemented before I make any serious criticism!

Anyways guys, keep up the good work!

Yes, It would be nice to keep the old look, and just add more variety and options.

i think that the new outfits are a bad idea they look to colorful i feel like it takes away the grittiness of the game/ professional look of the crew.

I like these faces. They’re not too beautiful and even ugly here and there. Just perfect. Not a fan of dyed hair and colorful outfits though. Please maintain the dark and gloomy style as much as you can. I’ve played alot of For Honor for pure and brutal medieval action with steel and blood (No magic!) But they turned it into another Fortnite with shiny fireworks, pet dragons, fantasy setting and rainbow emotes for “getting broader audience”. This is the first time I’m not entirely positive about an update since early 2020.
