The Crawler Hatchling is a baby variant of the Crawler.

Description

The Crawler Hatchling is significantly smaller than the Crawler. Its skin is underdeveloped, still being covered in blood and the gooey insides of the egg. Their teeth and claws are softer than the typical Crawler, as they have yet to harden with age. Despite their stature, they are still a threat to those around them, especially if their prey underestimates its ability.

Crawler Hatchlings are self-sufficient from birth and will protect any Crawler older than itself.

In-Game

Crawler Hatchlings can only spawn from Crawler Eggs. These can be found in infested Abandoned Outposts or in a Crawler Nest. They can also spawn from the 'suspicious metal box' event.

Due to their smaller size, Crawler Hatchlings are larger threats than regular Crawlers when considering swarming tactics. Their natural environment consists of tight spaces and low visibility, which allows them to sneak up on unsuspecting players who are caught off-guard by the hatching process. Once birthed, Crawler Hatchlings tend to target the nearest Human directly, moving quickly and providing little time for them to react.

Combat Strategies

Crawler Hatchlings pose a significantly reduced threat compared to regular Crawlers, however caution is still advised. Melee weapons such as the Crowbar or Boarding Axe can make swift work of a Crawler Hatchling if is unrealistic to maintain a safe distance. If ranged weaponry is preferred, the Revolver or SMG are optimal alternatives due to their high damage and accuracy, combined with relatively cheaper ammo. The Shotgun can immediately kill a Crawler Hatchling, however the ammunition costs makes this method difficult to recommend.

A Submarine's weaponry would be considered excessive if used against a Crawler Hatchling.
